Are fantasy sports contests legal?
The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA) deems fantasy sports leagues to be legal as
they do not constitute gambling. The UIGEA restricts online gambling, such as bingo, poker and casino
activities, but fantasy sports does not fall into any of these categories. Instead, fantasy sports contests are
considered to be games of skill as they require being able to predict which players will perform the best over
a series of events. When Congress passed the UIGEA law, it EXCLUDED a few types of Internet gaming. One
of those exclusions was fantasy sports. With stakeholders such as the NFL, MLB, AOL, Yahoo & ESPN all lobbying
Congress to keep fantasy sports legal, it's easy to understand why this exception was made. Still not convinced?
